Emily received a B.S. from Calvin College, majoring in biology with an environmental studies minor. She received an M.S. from the University of Michigan's School of Natural Resources that focused on ecosystem management with an emphasis in conservation. Emily worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service both in Colorado and at the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge before starting her career with the Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy.
